I consider myself both a modern and a contemporary artist. I come across contemporary artwork from all over the world. Art education differs from place to place, but there seems to be a lack of emphasis on art history and the traditions that artists have followed through the centuries to build up their craft. My strong opinion is to have fundamental skill or technical foundation before creating modern and contemporary art.
You need to know the past before you can go into the future. Famous Russian artist Kandinsky says that one can’t do abstract painting without first having learned how to paint in the figurative manner. And then, of course, the most famous modernist of all, Pablo Picasso, relied on a very strong, humanist aesthetic that can be traced back to the Classical world.
